Our Story

Oviston Primary School is a beacon of hope for its rural community, providing learners with opportunities to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Through the support of Community Assisting Schools (CAS), several impactful projects have been completed over the past year, contributing to the school’s remarkable transformation. CAS initiatives have focused on improving infrastructure, providing essential learning materials, and creating a more stimulating environment for students. From refurbishing classrooms to ensuring access to basic resources like stationery and books, these efforts have significantly enhanced the learning experience. Additionally, CAS has helped foster community involvement, encouraging volunteers and donors to support sustainable development projects within the school. By prioritizing both education and well-being, these initiatives not only uplift the students of Oviston Primary but also strengthen the broader community, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

Feeding Scheme

Feeding schemes combat hunger and malnutrition, helping vulnerable children grow, learn, and thrive. Balanced meals improve focus, school performance, and overall well-being, breaking the cycle of poverty.

CAS provides 200 meals twice daily at Oviston Primary—Immuno pap for breakfast and a cooked meal with bread for lunch. Fresh produce from the school’s garden, tended by local farmer Oupa Maans, supplements meals and teaches children life skills. Two dedicated kitchen staff prepare the food, ensuring every child is nourished and ready to succeed.

Staff Support

Community Assisting Schools (CAS) provides vital staff support at Oviston Primary by funding both a remedial teacher and librarian as well as a teacher’s aide, ensuring students receive academic assistance and access to books. The teacher’s aide, currently studying to become a Grade 0 teacher on a CAS-funded bursary, plays a key role in classroom support

School Painting

In September, Marsh Insurance repainted the school, revitalizing its appearance and creating a fresh, welcoming environment for learners and teachers alike. This effort has boosted school pride and further enhanced the positive atmosphere on campus.

Library Project

Bridge Ed donated funds for building a beautiful new library, completed in April. CAS furnished the library and filled it with books to create a welcoming space for learning. The library doubles as a remedial classroom, assists learners with reading, learning, and math. Isabel works one-on-one and with small groups of children who have learning difficulties, offering personalized support that has been transformative for many students.

  • Book Drives: Fiction and non-fiction books were sourced through Mandela Day 2023 and 2024 initiatives, with every book carefully covered in plastic to ensure longevity.

  • Opening Celebration: The library was officially opened in May, with teachers and guests dressing as book characters. The children, in their school uniforms, were thrilled to witness this significant addition to their school. For many, it was their first time experiencing the wonder of a library, making this space a treasured and impactful addition to the school and community.

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities have flourished at Oviston Primary, offering learners a variety of opportunities to grow beyond the classroom.

  • Knitting and Crocheting Club: This club runs every afternoon, teaching children practical skills that build confidence, patience, and creativity.

  • Chess Club: The chess club has introduced to the learners to teach strategic thinking and resilience. The children have participated in chess tournaments, embracing the chance to learn, compete, and grow.

  • Sports Program: The schools offers rugby, soccer, and athletics sessions with the children every afternoon, fostering teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness. These activities have become a highlight for the learners, and the school dreams of building a small sports center to support this growing enthusiasm for sports.
