THE LABOUR OF
LOVE PROJECT

The Labour of Love project operates out of Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Coronationville, Johannesburg. It was founded many years ago when it was brought to our attention that babies born in government hospitals were often taken home wrapped in newspaper due to the lack of essential supplies.

Recognizing the need for a sustainable solution, our volunteers from our reading program, skilled in knitting, sewing, and crocheting, stepped in to create quilts, baby blankets, beanies, booties, and knitted toys for very basic care packs. Over time, and with frequent visits to the hospital, we have fine-tuned the contents of these packs to address the needs of moms from disadvantaged communities, including those traveling from across Africa who may not even speak English.

Baby Packs

The hospital conditions are tough, and many moms are overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for a newborn, particularly in the kangaroo ward, which often accommodates twins or triplets that are born premature. Our baby packs are tailored to provide essential items for full-term or premature newborns. Each pack contains:

  • A baby grow (new or gently worn)

  • Nappies

  • Baby toiletries

  • A soft toy

  • A baby blanket

  • Wet wipes

  • A packet of Marie biscuits- to ensure moms, often sent home within  hours of delivery, have something to eat.

Pediatric Packs

In the pediatric ward, where many children lack basic toiletries or items to keep them occupied during their hospital stay, we provide pediatric packs containing:

  • Basic toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, moisturizer)

  • A treat (such as a chocolate or snack)

  • Marie biscuits

  • A coloring book and crayons

  • A toy

  • A blanket (generously donated by Warm the World)

These pediatric packs bring immense joy to the children, offering comfort and dignity during their hospital stay.

Additional Support

In the past, the Labour of Love project has donated gowns for women in the kangaroo ward and mammography unit, further extending its reach to support vulnerable individuals.

Additional Beneficiaries

Epilweni Clinic at RMMCH

Any leftover packs are donated to the Epilweni Clinic, which cares for terminally ill patients at the hospital. The clinic frequently requests bibles in vernacular languages (such as Sesotho, Zulu, Afrikaans, French, and English) to provide spiritual support for patients, which remains an ongoing need.

Nkhensani in Giyani, Limpopo

In addition to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, packs from our Mandela Day celebration were distributed in Giyani, Limpopo Province. Prem packs, newborn packs, and pediatric packs were provided to moms and children in the region, further extending the reach and impact of the Labour of Love project. This initiative brought essential supplies and hope to one of the most
underserved areas, demonstrating our commitment to supporting vulnerable communities across South Africa.

Sustained Impact

Although this initiative does not fall directly within the education space, the need is undeniable. With the backing of committed donors, the Labour of Love project continues to change lives, one pack at a time, bringing dignity, comfort, and hope to moms and children facing overwhelming challenges.
